Creating an Elder-Friendly Home

Creating an Elder-Friendly Home

Being more prone to falls, accidents and injuries, the elderly require homes that are comfortable, convenient, and safe spaces devoid of any hazards.

Making homes senior-friendly and thus avoiding falls and related injuries is a preventive measure, which can be achieved through simple, yet effective modifications. Some of the areas in a typical home set-up that are prone to accidents are washrooms, kitchens, and bedrooms especially. A senior-friendly home also gives them the confidence to move on and move without fear of fall.

How can you create senior-friendly spaces?

To make space senior-friendly and ensure accessibility and convenience here are a few tips that can be considered while designing/renovating homes.

  1. Make use of railings or grab bars: Some simple yet effective modifications can make homes senior-friendly, eliminating falls and related injuries and giving them more confidence to move around. Some areas of the home where the elderly are more prone to accidents include washrooms, kitchens and bedrooms. Use signage wherever necessary for clear communication.
  1. Install anti-slip mats and tiles: In high-risk slippery areas like washrooms, and balconies. Anti-slip mats prevent falls and provide extra grip and support to the feet. Avoid using glossy tiles that hide water spillage. Wooden floors can avoid falls compared to granite tiles.
  • Ensure adequate lighting in the house: A well-lit house can prevent falls. Avoid dim lighting. Use ceiling lights as they do not strain the eyes.  Use nightlights to avoid falls during dark hours. Ensure that all the spaces are well-ventilated to avoid claustrophobia.
  • Clutter-free, wheelchair-friendly floors: The floor must be clutter-free without any snapping cables, toys, or electrical appliances lying around. The floor must be threshold-free to easily manoeuvre the wheelchairs that a senior citizen may need.
    1. Lift for emergency: Having access to a lift is a must as accessing stairs, and climbing steps can be challenging for the elderly. That’s especially true while dwelling in multi-storied apartments.
    2. Keep in mind fire safety: Consider fire safety precautions. If an elderly person is cooking, ensure s/he, ensure they have help around, considering the poor vision one may have. Make sure the gas connection is leak-free and turned off after cooking. An elderly person must be kept aware of the fire exit.
  • Assistance when using sharp objects: As they are susceptible to falls due to poor vision, chances of hurting themselves while using sharp objects are high. So ensure that they have accessibility to help when using objects that can cause injury. Tape all the shelves and tables that have sharp edges and can injure them.
  • Choose bright wall colours: choosing bright and vibrant colours will not only liven up their abode but also bring a sense of positivity and will help elevate their mood.
